An antique pull-along toy horse dating from around 1850. It was donated in 2000 by the toy museum (Speelgoedmuseum) of the Belgian town of Mechelen. This museum, located northeast of Brussels, has been granted the title of “Cultural Ambassador of the Flanders” to acknowledge its broad cultural scope and its many visitors every year. Josef is what we call today a baby walker and it was used to help a child safely take his first steps: it was the ideal toy for very young horse lovers. Once he was bigger, the child could continue to play with it by riding it horseback and having someone pull it like a cart or using his own legs.
